The Toyota E-Series engine may have started out as just another reliable four-cylinder from a manufacturer known for them, but that didn't stop Toyota from twisting it to performance use. The JDM 4E-FTE may not be the best known of turbocharged Toyota engines, but it's earned an impressive cult following as a retrofit for other E-series Tercels and Corollas not blessed with the boosted performance of their overseas Starlet and Glanza cousins.

The 4EFTE engine was throttle-body fuel injected, had a displacement of 1, cc, and featured dual overhead camshafts. Ignition duty was handled by a distributor, and a Toyota-produced CT9 turbo provided the boost. An electrically controlled wastegate set the boost at either 5. The spark plug gap distance is 0. The 4EFTE engine had 16 valves, four per cylinder. These valves were oriented at 25 degrees, and the combustion chamber had a volume of 39 cc. The compression ratio was 8.

Just have to disagree with one thing that I noticed. Being a high compression engine, the internal wastegate doesnt flow well enough to hold boost at 0.

It does no harm to change it but no need to go looking for one. If you had one there then why not. You can bolt ct9 onto 4efe with other mods. No engine swap or loom swap needed. Im also doing this. Its cheaper to buy the standard 4efte stuff than to get a piggyback and pay for mapping.

Ive done a few now and its a lot easier than it sounds. Its cheap and easy, the parts are not hard to come by either. As ive said in a lot of these threads theres more than one way to do it, neither are right or wrong its just personal preference.

Some good info on here thanks very much. For me I'll be using stock 4efte parts and see how the engine copes and how the car feels. Plus it's cost affective and by the time it comes to it. By the time I go turbo ill already be running a piggy back along with a few other things to spread the cost out.

Every setup is different and a number suitable to an other same car could be catastrofic to use to your own. Better go to a rr and record your afr by a wideband. Then turn your fuell pressure up to be on the very rich side and then trim the fuel down by the safc to suit your afr targets.

What you wana search when you are ready to go out on the road is Idle 14,7 to 15 light load till 2 psi max at around If you have a standard engine you can go a bit lower on the rich side to prevent engine failure at higher boost. Before anything adjust your ignition timing and make sure all your igntition parts are top contition.

Hello matey seems like we're in the same boat, ive considered this option and to be honest your best bet is to go with either the 4age or 4agze engines, the 4efe can take a tubo conversion but you wouldnt be able to run very high boost or so ive been told and the 4efte lump will be a fair bit as they are rare and would have to be imported unless someones scrapping a turbo starlet over here, check out fensport they have a rough guide price wise, but you'll be able to get the engine much cheaper if you search around, im still looking for the right opportunity to get my conversion under way, if you want to talk anymore PM me.

I have only ever seen 1 car that used the 4afe with a turbo and thats in germany I think he used a kit for the 4efe To be honest it would be better to go for a 4age 20v and trubo that or get a supercharged 4agze like I have done.

The E engines were the first multi-valve engines from Toyota designed with economy, practicality and everyday use in mind rather than performance. Like many other Toyota engines from the era, the E engine series features a cast iron blockalong with an aluminium cylinder head. E engines are lighter than earlier Toyota engines, due to the hollow crankshaftthinned casting of the cylinder block, and several other reductions in auxiliaries as well as in the engine itself.

Carbureted versions include a newly designed, variable-venturi carburetor. All of these changes improved economy and emissions.

The most common problems affecting these engines are premature valve stem seal nitrile rubber failure, carbon buildup on the intake valves, and collapse of the oil control ring on the piston. The valve stem seals, at least, can be replaced with silicone or Viton-based seals which last much longer.

The 4E engines appeared in fuel-injected applications. The first generation of 4E engines found in the Starlet GI, Soleil and Corolla models were produced from until This engine has more in common with the 4E-FTE, sharing the same throttle body, and slightly larger fuel injectors. The second generation of the 4E-FE is essentially the same engine as the first but the intake and exhaust manifolds were changed along with a slight alteration of the ECU meant to reduce exhaust emissions.

This engine was discontinued in However the 4E-FTE was a very popular conversion engine by enthusiasts for many small Toyota cars such as the Corolla, Tercel, Paseo and Sera which it fit into with standard Toyota parts. The cylinder head and valve train are identical to the 4E-FE. The 4E-FTE also features a harmonic damper instead of a normal crankshaft pulley. The low boost mode is electronically controlled by a solenoid valve and the ECU and the high boost is controlled by an actuator connected to the turbocharger.

Tunsafe setup

What do I need to Turbo it? I can get hold of a stock exhaust manifold with a T25 flange welded on and a SR20 turbo with dump pipe. I can sort out water and oil lines and the oil drain fitting in the sump easy enough but what about the oil filter. This oil filter relocator has confused me a bit.

I have a LT-8s microtech to use as well. What about injectors? Will the stock units do for a while, what sort of boost will I be able to run with them? Cheers Jason. Hey Guys I have done heaps of searching and read the sticky at the top. The real question is, would you tell your friends you were beaten by a starlet? The were running about 15psi on standard internals with the 4efe from memory. Posted 11 January - AM as long as it has a good tune in it anything up to 15 sometimes 18psi will last a long time The turbo is "The one I am selling is slightly a smaller turbo than the T25G of the sr20det but bigger than the CT9 by the way it has been hi flowed to the sr20 compressor wheel".

Does this sound ok? In any case you wont run that sorta power on an internally stock 4E to max out those injectors.
